This book is the story of a year in the life of a teenaged boy who lived in the early 1900's in a small Georgia town. During that year his grandmother dies and, less than a month later, his grandfather remarries--and she is a yankee. The townspeople are shocked and his daughters hurt and embarrassed. The grandson feels caught in the middle, like he is the only one besides Grandpa who likes this woman. It is a story of church going, and of very un-Christian behavior. It is a glimpse at a time in our history when Blacks and Whites got along--but Blacks knew their places, and Whites never thought there was anything wrong with that. The story shows how the love of family can build us up and make us more than we are alone--and how family can pull us down. The ending is very open-ended and the back of the book shows that there is a sequel. I'm going to have to read it.
