Tuesday Thingers

Here is Wendi's question this week.

Check out her post; she has a poll and you can get links to other's answers.

Today's question: How do you get your books for reviewing? Do you track them somehow (excel, database, etc), or just put them in a tbr (To Be Read for anyone that doesn't know) pile?

When I started reviewing books here, I got most of them from Bookmooch. A little less than a year ago I surfed onto a First Wildcard tour and got my first review copies. Now it is my primary source of reading material. However, I still have my bookmooch account. I also review for The Catholic Company, which is a Catholic bookstore, and for Thomas Nelson Publishers. I recently got two books from Phenix and Phenix publicists. I've also gotten few emails from other publicists and enter contests on other blogs. At this point, I'm managing to keep up with the reviews, and get a few other books in on the side.

I'd love to get on some lists for children's books. Does anyone know someone looking for reviewers?

As far as keeping track of them, if they are tour/review books they go in a stack beside my bed and are read in the order due (if near) or received (if I said I'd review, but don't have a due date). If I don't have anything "due" for a week, I may head to the stack in the junkroom. I've also got a stack of "I want to read it, I ought to read it, but I just can't seem to finish it" books; usually spiritual in nature and usually taking a bit longer to read than my novels. I've resolved to read a chapter a day of these books, whether I "want" to or not. I"m making progress, because usually once I start I get more than a chapter read.

I use this blog to keep track of what I have read. I also use Goodreads. I have accounts on Shelfari and LT, but I find Goodreads easier to use so it is my default choice. I post reviews to the others if asked

  1. I belong to Goodreads, LT and Shelfari too. Once in awhile I'll post a review there. Shelfari is my site of choice, but I use them all.

  2. Most of my books come from First Wild Cards but a few also come from Catholic Company and Thomas Nelson.
When a book arrives, I place a Post-It on the cover with the tour's date and then place the books in a basket by my bed. I also keep a spreadsheet so I don't request more than I can read; I don't like to request books and then be unable to read them for reviewing.
I have a harder time keeping track of Catholic Company and Thomas Nelson since there is not a specific date to post their reviews. I need to develop a system for them.

  3. Actually, your organization seems very good! I'm trying to get my books organized, and I'm having a harder time than I expected. :)

Thanks for participating in Thingers last week! I've got the post up for this week - What's your favorite genre? ~ Wendi
