Book Review: Second Chances

About the Book:
Nugget, California, is a spot-in-the-road that's easy to miss. But this little mountain town knows how to give the struggling and discouraged many paths back to happiness—and love…

Reporter Harlee Roberts is used to finding the story, not living it. Unfortunately, losing her dream job and glittering city life means she needs a serious rewrite. Downtime at her parents' cabin in Nugget is a break she could really use. But the less her rugged woodworker neighbor has to say to her, the more Harlee’s natural curiosity is piqued, and the more she wants exclusive access—to his heart…

Nugget's open spaces and mountain quiet are the perfect refuge for Colin Burke. All he wants is solitude, to mind his own business—and for Harlee to mind hers. Still, her live-wire personality and take-no-prisoners commitment to those she cares about are a temptation pulling him way too close. Is their connection strong enough to survive his secrets—and risk a future together?

My Comments:
The strength of this romance is its characters.  I loved both Harlee and Colin.  At first I thought Harlee was a spoiled little rich girl without many brains but I grew to appreciate her as a young (I keep forgetting that these romance heroines are my kids' age, not mine) woman who, though she had a reasonably privileged upbringing, had made her way in the world, only to have her world pulled out from under her.  Instead of sitting around complaining about how the world was out to get her, she brushed herself off, went on to plan b and in the process, met a great guy.

Colin has obviously been hurt before and little by little his story unfolds.  His disaster was mostly not his fault but he doesn't lay blame or spend his life mourning what might have been.  Yes, he has issues, but who among us does not?

I suspected as I read the book that it was part of a larger series, and Amazon says it is book three in a series set in a small northern California town.  While the story stood well on its own, I am curious about the other people in town.  My NetGalley included the first chapter of the next book, and it definitely caught my eye.

Minuses for me were some crude terms for sexual reactions and the fact that the cast of characters included a lesbian couple who just had a baby.

I'd like to thank the publisher for making a review cop available via NetGalley.  Grade:  B.
