Friday was the last day of my baby's Junior year in high school. She's been very fortunate as the year has been almost normal. The school was quick to send individual students or groups of students home to quarantine but they opened on time in August and finished last week with no school-wide closings and managed to give the girls much of the fun stuff like retreats, proms, rally, and some other school traditions. Compared to other schools in the area, it sounds like we got as close to normal as anyone and my daughter said that absenteeism has not been excessive. Hopefully by August things will be back to normal completely and they can ditch the masks.
My son turned 29 this month. Its hard to believe that our years with children in the house are almost over. I'm kind of glad and kind of sad.
On the reading front, I read
It is the sixth book in a saga about a family in Maine. It is available as part of a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Its not a bad story, though it seems hard to believe that everything that has happened in these books has all happened to the same family
This is the second book in a two-part series that should have been one book. I reviewed the first book, Bumped, ten year ago and was looking at my archives recently and wondered whatever happened to the characters. Thumped was available on Hoopla from my library so I gave it a whirl. It was ok, but I don't think I was the target audience.

ReplyDeleteSounds like you were lucky with your daughter's school. Ours here in Minnesota were either virtual or hybrid most of the year. I seem to recall reading Bumped years ago. I'm finding it harder and harder to connect with YA as I get older. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

ReplyDeleteI can relate to the empty nest thing- we're approaching that as well! And glad things have been as normal as possible- our high school was in person with an online component but they've been open all year.
ReplyDeleteMy eldest grandson is finishing his junior year. The grandkids in Florida have been in school all year. Our granddaughter in Illinois had hybrid. I think she will be very happy to be back in the fall.
ReplyDeleteI don't seem to enjoy the YA books so much unless it is really good Sci Fi or fantasy. Still, I try one now and then to see how it goes.

Awww, I'm glad your daughter got an almost-normal junior year! The schools here only went to hybrid in April, so at least the kids got a little time in the classroom. The good news is it looks like we'll have something close to normality in the fall. Have a great week!

2021 Big Book Summer Challenge
We lucked out with school this year, too. Most of the year was in person, and we had only isolated incidents of students needing to quarantine. Prom was on campus instead of the usual place, but overall they kept everything as normal as possible.
ReplyDeleteOur oldest is 34, the middle one will turn 20 soon, and the baby just finished her junior year of high school as well. Like you, I am both happy and sad.
