It's Monday: What Are You Reading?

My reading this week was varied:

The Color of Atmosphere: One Doctor's Journey In and Out of MedicineIf the medical profession you'd devoted your life to was completely taken over by liability concerns and insurance regulations, would you stay a physician?

The Color of Atmosphere tells one doctor's story and the route of her medical career with warmth, humor, and above all, honesty. As we follow Maggie Kozel from her idealistic days as a devoted young pediatrician, through her Navy experience with universal health coverage, and on into the world of private practice, we see not only her reverence for medical science, and her compassion for her patients, but also the widening gap between what she was trained to do and what is eventually expected of her.
Her personal story plays out against the backdrop of our changing health-care system, and demonstrates the way our method of paying for health care has reached its way into the exam room, putting a stranglehold on how doctors practice, and profoundly influencing the doctor-patient relationship. The stories she shares illustrate the medical, economic, and moral complexities of US health care. To understand Dr. Kozel's ultimate decision to leave medicine is to better comprehend the disconnect between our considerable medical resources and how our health-care system falls short of delivering them.   My Review  Via NetGalley
Veil of Fire: A Novel

In 1894, the worst firestorm in Minnesota history descended on the town of Hinckley, consuming 400 square miles and killing 418 people in just four hours.

Heat, flame, and darkness swept through the town, devouring lives, and consuming all hope. In the aftermath of the fire, the town of Hinckley rises from the ashes, its people determined to rebuild their lives.

But in the shadows, someone is watching, someone is waiting, someone who knows the secrets the fire lay bare. A rumor spreads of a mysterious figure that haunts the hills; monster, a ghost, or a memory?   My Review.  From a friend.
Wrangler in Petticoats (Sophie's Daughters)

Ride into the Rockies where love peaks between a tough Texas tomboy and a passionate artist. On her way to Montana, Sally McClellan’s party is attacked and robbed. But then artist Logan McKenzie saves the badly wounded cowgirl who has been left for dead. Can this landscape painter tame the tomboy without breaking her spirit? Sally doesn’t know much about ribbons and lace, but Logan’s presence makes her want to connect with her feminine side. Will this fractured female discover a way to capture the artist’s love—or find herself captured and killed by outlaws?  My Review  Via NetGalley

If you have ever taken the sacraments for granted, The Power of the Sacraments will lead you to a deeper appreciation for their transforming power. Sr. Briege McKenna's brief exposition of each sacrament and her inspiring stories demonstrating their power in the lives of ordinary people will open you to a greater reliance on the grace of these seven gifts of God. Throughout your life, God continues to give you what you need for the journey through these signs of his love.

This book includes chapters on each of the sacraments, each including a story or two about people who received healing or special graces through that sacrament. Descriptions of each sacrament distill the essence of each and are ideal for reflection and prayer.  My Review.  Via The Catholic Company
