Monday Memes

Mailbox Monday is hosted this month by MariReads and is where book bloggers gather to share what showed up in their mailboxes this week, whether those mailboxes received email or snail mail.

Snail Mail:
When the Soul Mends (Sisters of the Quilt, Book 3)
After receiving a desperate and confusing call from her sister, Hannah Lapp reluctantly returns to the Old Order Amish community of her Pennsylvania childhood.

Having fled in disgrace more than two years earlier, she finally has settled into a satisfying role in the Englischer world. She also has found love and a new family with the wealthy Martin Palmer and the children she is helping him raise. But almost immediately after her arrival in Owl’s Perch, the disapproval of those who ostracized her, including her headstrong father, reopens old wounds.

As Hannah is thrown together with former fiancĂ© Paul Waddell to work for her sister Sarah’s mental health, hidden truths surface about events during Hannah’s absence, and she faces an agonizing decision. Will she choose the Englischer world and the man who restored her hope, or will she heed the call to return to the Plain Life–and perhaps to her first love?

My Foolish Heart (Deep Haven)
Unknown to her tiny town of Deep Haven, Isadora Presley spends her nights as Miss Foolish Heart, the star host of a syndicated talk radio show. Millions tune in to hear her advice on dating and falling in love, unaware that she’s never really done either. Issy’s ratings soar when it seems she’s falling in love on-air with a caller. A caller she doesn’t realize lives right next door.
Caleb Knight served a tour of duty in Iraq and paid a steep price. The last thing he wants is pity, so he hides his disability and moves to Deep Haven to land his dream job as the high school football coach. When his beautiful neighbor catches his eye, in a moment of desperation he seeks advice from My Foolish Heart, the show that airs before his favorite sports broadcast.
Before he knows it, Caleb finds himself drawn to the host—and more confused than ever. Is his perfect love the woman on the radio . . . or the one next door?

I got the following from NetGalley:
Lethal Remedy (Prescription for Trouble)What happens when the race to stop a lethal bacteria becomes a race to stop a killer?

Dr. Sara Miles’s teenage patient is on the brink of death from an overwhelming, highly resistant infection  with Staph luciferus, known to doctors as “the killer.” Only an experimental antibiotic, developed and administered by Sara’s ex-husband, Dr. Jack Ingersoll, can save the girl's life.

Seeking to put his life back together after the death of his wife, Dr. John Ramsey joins the medical center faculty staff. But his decision to do so could prove to be costly and even fatal.

Potentially lethal late effects from the experimental drug send Sara and her colleague, Dr. Rip Pearson, on a hunt for hidden critical data that will let them reverse the changes before it’s too late. What is the missing puzzle piece? And who is hiding it?

The Volunteers' Guide to Fundraising: Raise Money for Your School, Team, Library or Community GroupOver one quarter of Americans volunteer with nonprofits. Many of these nonprofits, at the smaller end of the revenue scale, are likely to benefit from small-group fundraising efforts.

The Volunteers' Guide to Fundraising is a comprehensive but accessible guide to raising money for a group, cause or workplace, written for both volunteers and staff who aren't necessarily professional fundraisers. Containing insights and stories from a team of nonprofit experts, including executive directors, accountants, event planners, lawyers, and group leaders, the book explains both the practical and the fun, creative aspects of fundraising.

PTA presidents, parents of children who belong to music groups or sports teams, staff in small libraries and others learn how to mobilize volunteers, legally raise and handle money (and avoid trouble with the IRS), prepare grant proposals and plan their fundraising strategies. Specifically, they'll learn how to raise money through various methods:

  • sponsorships and donations from businesses

  • selling goods and services

  • member donations

  • special events and auctions

  • dinners and other food events

  • benefit concerts, lectures and shows

Taking the approach that volunteers may not have a paycheck, donor history database and other tools used by established nonprofits, this book shows them how to make the most of the resources they do have.

  • The Clue in the Recycling Bin (The Boxcar Children Mysteries #126)
When Mrs. MacGregor introduces the Aldens to the local recycling center, they bring home lots of great stuff, including unused notebooks and fun pinata. Mrs. MacGregor was right, you can find treasure in junk. When a series of break-ins and vandalization hits the center, the Alden kids are there to help solve the mystery!
Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss & LoveMatt and Liz Logelin were high school sweethearts. After years of long-distance dating, the pair finally settled together in Los Angeles, and they had it all: a perfect marriage, a gorgeous new home, and a baby girl on the way. Liz's pregnancy was rocky, but they welcomed Madeline, beautiful and healthy, into the world on March 24, 2008.

Just twenty-seven hours later, Liz suffered a pulmonary embolism and died instantly, without ever holding the daughter whose arrival she had so eagerly awaited. Though confronted with devastating grief and the responsibilities of a new and single father, Matt did not surrender to devastation; he chose to keep moving forward-- to make a life for Maddy.

In this memoir, Matt shares bittersweet and often humorous anecdotes of his courtship and marriage to Liz; of relying on his newborn daughter for the support that she unknowingly provided; and of the extraordinary online community of strangers who have become his friends. In honoring Liz's legacy, heartache has become solace.

Miss Timmins' School for Girls: A Novel
A murder at a British boarding school in the hills of western India launches a young teacher on the journey of a lifetime

In 1974, three weeks before her twenty-first birthday, Charulata Apte arrives at Miss Timmins' School for Girls in Panchgani. Shy, sheltered, and running from a scandal that disgraced her Brahmin family, Charu finds herself teaching Shakespeare to rich Indian girls in a boarding school still run like an outpost of the British Empire. In this small, foreign universe, Charu is drawn to the charismatic teacher Moira Prince, who introduces her to pot-smoking hippies, rock ‘n' roll, and freedoms she never knew existed.
Then one monsoon night, a body is found at the bottom of a cliff, and the ordered worlds of school and town are thrown into chaos. When Charu is implicated in the murder—a case three intrepid schoolgirls take it upon themselves to solve—Charu's real education begins. A love story and a murder mystery, Miss Timmins' School for Girls is, ultimately, a coming-of-age tale set against the turbulence of the 1970s as it played out in one small corner of India.
