Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival

I'd like to welcome everyone to Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival.  We are a group of Catholic bloggers who gather weekly to share our best posts with each other.  To particpate, go to your blog and create an entry titled Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival.  In it, highlight one or more of your posts from the past week that you believe would be of interest to Catholic bloggers---whether they are posts reflecting on spiritual matters or posts about antics of Catholic kids, or anything in between.  Come back here and enter the URL of that post below.  Finally, go visit other participants, and leave comments!  If you want a weekly reminder to post, join our yahoogroup.

We enjoyed the last week before school starts by taking a short family vacation.  We went to visit my dad on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  Attractions we visited included Gulf Islands Water Park, Davis Bayou, and Stennis Space Center.  We also rode jet skis one day.  My husband and I took advantage of the built in babysitter and ran away from home for the night.  Today has been devoted to buying and fixing school uniforms, labeling school supplies and otherwise getting the girls ready to go.  My son is headed to the local community college but he has another week before starting.  He will only be going two days a week, and hopes to get a job too.  He isn't all that enthusiastic about school but his mean mom won't let him spend any more time sitting around doing nothing but household chores.

I haven't read anything particularly Catholic or extraordinarily good this week, but invite you to take a look at the reviews I did post.  I'd also like to call your attention to a contest you can enter, if you are reading this on Saturday (deadline is Saturday at midnight).  Timothy at Catholic Bibles is giving away a NABRE gift pack.

What about you?  What have you posted about this week?

  1. The trip to the Mississippi coast sounds terrific! We want to get to the space centers eventually...we talked about Alabama this year but nixed the idea. What is at Stennis?

  4. Two days a week at cc sounds like a good transition for Jay. What class(s) will he be taking?

  7. Kathleen, Stennis is where they test the engines for the space ships. They also have the Naval Oceanographic Office on site. I'd classify Stennis as something that is interesting if you are in the area, but not anything that you would go to the area to see. The procedure is that you gather at the I-10 rest stop nearby and wait for the tour bus. The tour bus takes you on a tour of the facility (including drive-bys of the test platforms) that lasts about 20 minutes. It then drops you at the museum where you can stay as long as you want (until the final bus of the day departs). The museum has some space program artifacts, some hurricane info and some info about the area. There is no cost and my family spent about two hours there (including a reasonably priced lunch).

  8. Renne, He is majoring in Computer Information Technology--Webmaster option. This semester he is taking Intro to network logic, intro to business, intro to internet and college algebra. The algebra is "come to the lab when you want, as long as you finish your work and are here at least three hours a week". There is a teacher present, but he doesn't have to sit and listen to a lecture which should be good for him.

Evidently the fact that he doesn't need any remedial classes puts him ahead of most of the incoming class, which is a good thing.

  9. "took advantage of the built in babysitter and ran away from home for the night."

    That's living.

Preceded by The Safety Corner, about the nanny state.

I only have a couple of posts this week because my husband was ill - but all well now.

  13. Hi RAnn,
I asked the question "Was Mary Special?" This stemmed from an encounter with a nice Lutheran lady at a county fair who questioned the Catholic view on Mary. Interestingly, Martin Luther was a big fan of Mary and has been criticized by fundamentalists for his love of the Blessed Mother! Such a silly world these days...

  14. After a week off because of a family trip, I am happy to be back this week with a string of posts covering everything from summer sausage and hunting knives to pro golf and Robert Browning, with another look at homosexualist activism, two pieces on the experience of parents, and a video for International Baccalaureate thrown in. Please check out the video and leave your comments. I will explain in a post on Monday.

    Thanks, RAnn, for hosting!

  15. This week I wrote about my work as a FOCUS missionary as I get ready to return to Seton Hall University, specifically my work with the baseball team and our devotion to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.

  16. I made another post stemming from a debate on Facebook about the existence of God (from an atheist who denies God). A consequence of befriending people from all parts of our life is having friends who disagree with us on faith. Unfortunately, it is difficult to debate something adequately on Facebook because it is for "microblogging" only. The real debate must migrate to a blog.

    Here is my post: http://www.soldierofmary.com/2011/08/god-vs-atheism-on-facebook.html

  17. Thank you Moonshadow for the warm welcome. I am so glad to be here and excited too. RAnn thank you for inviting me.

I wanted to add one more post to my offerings. I was so feed up with all the political talk on tweeter and facebook, really I think all that talk is just a cover for people allowing themselves to vent, that I wrote a post on pledging to be positive: http://www.spiritual-lives-of-women.com/2011/08/i-pledge.html

Would love to know what you all think of it, and please do leave me comments...LOVE them!

    blessings
