Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Marcia at The Printed Page. Book bloggers gather to share the goodies the mail carrier brought the week before.  What did I get?
Remembering the LadiesWhen her husband headed off to help form the government for the new country, Dolly Madison told him to "Remember the ladies".  While history suggests he didn't heed her advice, Ann Covell remembers Dolly and other early First Ladies in Remembering the Ladies, which I got for review via Bostick.

101 Things I Learned (TM) in Culinary School101 Things I Learned (TM) in Culinary School is just what the title implies:  101 food preparation/restaurant operations tips.  I received it from Hachette for review.  My review is here.

Good Returns: Making Money by Morally Responsible InvestingGood Returns: Making Money by Morally Responsible Investing is for a First Wildcard tour and is about financially investing in a morally responsible way.  It features the Ave Maria family of mutual funds, which is the largest family of Catholic mutual funds in the country--funds which have been successful not only financially but also morally.

Usually when one thinks of Catholic spiritual heroes, the canonized saints come to mind.  This book, Unlikely Spiritual Heroes, is about spiritual heroes of the 20th Century.  It  has one canonized saint (Maximilian Kolbe) in its listing, and at least one more who is likely to be be canonized (John Paul II) but the other people remind us that not all spiritual heroes (and not all people in heaven) are canonized saints.  I received it for review from The Catholic Company.

  3. I always understood that the quote "Remember the Ladies" came from Abigail Adams, in a letter to her husband John Adams.

  5. The Unlikely Heros choses most of the people I read about in my modern Catholic class- 30 years ago. Good to see they still are in the top. Merton is amongst my favorites here (I think he will be canonized as well someday).
