Kindle Freebie: Maximum Insecurity

About the Book:
After three decades as a successful ear surgeon, William Wright, MD is bored beyond belief. He dabbles with retirement, but finds idleness infuriating. He has to do something.

Then he sees an ad for a doctor’s position from the Colorado Department of Corrections at a supermax prison. Now that, he thinks, would be different. His wife has some thoughts on the matter too. She thinks her husband just lost his mind and is on a collision course with a prison shiv.

After his first day on the job, he wonders if she wasn’t onto something. His first patient is an arrogant, callous youth convicted of five cold-blooded murders. Dr. Wright has to steel himself not to bolt.

Nothing prepares a doctor for life at the Colorado State Penitentiary. He quickly discovers treating maximum security convicts is like treating recalcitrant murderous four-year-olds. Always willing to threaten their doctors with bodily harm, they are more interested in scamming drugs than treatment.

Told with self-depreciating humor and scathing wit, Maximum Insecurity describes Dr. Wright’s adventures practicing medicine in a supermax correctional facility without, he’s glad to say, getting killed even once.

My Comments:
I've told you all before that my day job working as a paralegal, and that my caseload includes criminal cases.  Like most people in the criminal law business, I know people who are in prison, and I'll admit to a certain curiosity about what it is really like in there.  Dr. William Wright writes about what it is really like to be the doctor in a supermax prison, a prison where they put the inmates who are a danger to themselves or others in a regular maximum security prison.  These supermax prisoners are locked in individual cells 23/7 and only allowed out to exercise/shower for an hour a day, with no other inmates.  I'd go stark raving mad.  Given so much free time, one thing these inmates do is come up with reasons they need to see a doctor (and then they try to convince the doctor they need drugs).

Dr. Wright's stories are funny, though the book is a little repetitive at times.  I got it as a freebie on Amazon, and it was definitely worth more than I paid for it.  Grade:  B.

Kindle Freebie Review: Home for the Holidays

About the Book:
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS - a heartwarming Christmas novella about true friendship, helping those in need, and falling in love. . .What's a girl to do when she falls in love with her lifelong best friend? Small town librarian Lauren Forrester moves to St. Louis so that handsome contractor Jeffrey Warren can find a wife without having to deal with Lauren's moods. But when Jeffrey shows up on her doorstep to convince her to come home for a country Christmas, will the hardheaded pair lose their friendship or find something even more precious?

My Comments:
I got this when it was an Amazon Freebie, though it is not free at the time I am writing this (in July).  It's an old story--they have been best friends forever.  Each is secretly in love with the other, afraid to take the next step for fear of losing the friendship.  Toss in Lauren doing a good deed for a family in distress and you have all the makings of a charming Christmas read.  Grade:  B- (sweet, charming, not very original).

Kindle Freebie: The Sea Glass Sisters

About the Book:
Elizabeth Gallagher has been balancing on the ragged edge for a while now. Then a rough case on the boards of her 911 operator’s job collides with a family conflict at home, and Elizabeth finds herself finally coming apart at the seams. A four-state road trip—trapped in a car with her mother—is the last thing she needs. Their destination may be beautiful Hatteras Island, but the reason for going is anything by pleasant. After one disastrous hurricane, and with a second one working its way up the coast, it’s time to convince Aunt Sandy to abandon her little seaside store on North Carolina’s Outer Banks and return to the family fold in Michigan. But when the storm sweeps through, the three women will discover that sisterhood and the sea can change hearts, lives, and futures . . . often in the most unpredictable of ways.

My Comments:
I don't know how much longer this is going to be free, but my advice to you is to check the link ASAP, see if it still is, and if it is, buy it.  It it is not free it is $2.99 on Amazon and I'd say it is worth it.
The writing is beautiful, I'd love to be friends with the characters and Lisa Wingate does a great job of depicting both hurricane season and the seasons of life.  As noted in the title link, the book is a prelude to another, and the first chapters of The Prayer Box are generously provided as well.  However, I didn't finish The Sea Glass Sister unsatisfied, as if I was missing the whole story.  While classified as Christian fiction, it is on the milder end of the spectrum and prayers don't make all the bad things go away.

Thanks to Tyndale for the freebie.  Grade: A.

Kindle Freebie Review: Homecoming: A Wisconsin Reunion Romance

About the Book:
Cory Wells-Richards left her cheating husband behind and headed straight back to tiny Faythe, Wisconsin, eager to create a future for herself. First order of business, keep her promise to a dear friend and finish the renovation on the Victorian for dearly departed Tillie and find homes for her nine cats. How tough could that be? But when Tille's great-nephew shows up to help, it's all she can do not to fall right back into his arms. She's been down that heartbreak road with him before, and coming off her recent divorce she's determined to guard her heart, no matter how sexy he looks with a hammer in his hand and his shirt off.

Jake is caught between a rock and a hard place. Well, between his party-hearty, successful big city life in Chicago and the sleepy hometown he was glad to see in his rear-view mirror at the tender age of 18. He plans to fulfill his promise to Tillie and help restore her house to get it ready to sell, then return to his comfortable life in Chicago. But how is he supposed to get any work done with pretty little Cory around doing her best to drive him crazy? Being in Faythe rekindles all those long forgotten memories, some bad and some good--including his desire for Cory, the one girl he couldn't have.

As the sexual tension between Cory and Jake heightens and their emotional connection strengthens, will they let down their barriers long enough to find true love, or will the pain of the past keep them apart forever?

Published by Grantitude Press, where 10% of the author's royalties are given to a designated charity for each ebook. For HOMECOMING, the charity is FreeKibbleKat.

My Comments:
I download far more Kindle freebies than you see reviewed here.  Most are worth what I paid for them.  Those that are worth more are often backlist books from authors about to release a new book.  This book is an exception to those rules.  It is an ebook only by an indie author and it really is a good read.  I don't read with a red pen but while many Kindle freebies make me want one, this one did not.  In short, I could easily see this book being published by a print publisher.

It is a romance novel, and like many romance novels, the premise is a little unbelievable.  Aunt Tillie left the house to both Cory and Jake, but with the proviso that they live in it together for three months and fix it  up for sale. Want to guess what happens?  Turns out they were high school sweethearts.  Turns out that each still sort of carries a flame for the other.  Turns out that what separated them wasn't quite what they thought it was.  Turns out that...

There is one very steamy scene but other than that, the physical references are more flowery than anatomic.
Grade:  B- which is about the best I give these short romances.

Kindle Freebie: Unwilling Wife

About the Book:
Their war of wills was on!

Gina had been young, in awe of the older man who swept her off her feet, lifting her into a bright world of new experiences. But after ten years of marriage, she found herself fearful of totally disappearing, becoming nothing more than an extension of her husband, her every opinion, every idea, dismissed—all, of course, for her own good. Panic-stricken, Gina ran three thousand miles away, determined to become a whole, fully functional human being in her own right.

David would have none of it, as resolute to win her back as she was to shed his controlling influence. What a shame their sex life held explosive passions so thrilling Gina feared his soft seductions might weaken her resolve. David counted on it.

My Comments:
While a bit on the steamy side, this book raised some interesting questions about marriage.  Gina is feeling smothered by her husband who clearly is the dominant person in their marriage.  She asked for red plaid luggage and he got her brown leather--more practical, more appropriate.  She wants chocolate; he buys her roses.  He is into eating healthy; she wants chocolate.  When he won't listen to her, she basically runs away from home and then files for divorce.  It is not that she hates him; rather she just wants an opportunity to be someone other than his other half.  He follows her across the country to try to woo her back, but won't leave her alone.  Where does wooing stop and stalking begin?  One of the places he tries to woo her is in bed; is that a good idea?  If the main place a couple is happy together is in bed, does that mean they should split?

The book is a little different than your average romance novel and while I found some of the scenes improbable, it was an enjoyable read.  Grade:  B.

Kindle Freebie: Light This Candle

About the Book:
Each year, the Harlequin More Than Words award is given to three women who have worked hard to change people's lives for the better. Inspired by their accomplishments, three bestselling authors have written stories to honor these real-life heroines.

In Light This Candle, Major Mitch McConnell has arrived home after serving overseas for nearly two years. Now he can finally give his condolences to Cassidy Frazier, whose husband died under his command. But when he tracks down the single mother, he finds out that Cassidy is about to be evicted and her son, Cody, is in the hospital.

At first, Cassidy tells Mitch she doesn't want his help. The military wasn't there for her when it mattered most, so she certainly doesn't need them now. But Mitch is more than a soldier: he's a caring, gentle man who's determined to ease Cassidy's burdens. And if she lets him into her family, perhaps she can give Mitch something worth fighting for...

Look for all three ebooks inspired by real-life heroines: Good Neighbors by Sheila Roberts, Just Joe by Carla Cassidy and Light This Candle by Cindy Dees.

My Comments:
This one is a real tear-jerker.  Cody is not only in the hospital, he's dying unless he can get a transplant.  When Mitch asks the hospital social worker about Cassidy's needs, the social worker suggests that what she needs is him, and for him to be there for her and reliable.  Yes, things happen fast, and no, I don't think I ever doubted the ending but it was a sweet read that had me in tears a couple of times.  For the price, what more could I want.

Like all the books in this series, it introduces us to a charity and the woman who started it.  In this case the charity is Patches of Light, which is dedicating to helping families of critically ill children.   Grade:  B-.

Another sweet read which pays homage to a charity, in this case, Youth Assisting Youth.  It is a clean read and if you are a fan of the Icicle Falls series, you'll see a few old friends mentioned.  Grade:  B-.

My Comments:
I enjoyed this quick sweet read. As noted above the setting includes a garden for charity and that's what brings the characters together. This book is part of a series, and each book in the series features a charity and the woman who started it.  In this case, the charity is the Emergency Food Network.

Kindle Freebie: Twice the Trouble

About the Book:
Lacey Carlyle has worked for years to create the perfect blend of home, business and family. Now she risks losing everything when the land she farms is bought by the man who abandoned her thirteen years ago.

Alex has never understood why Lacey walked away from him. Now, he holds the deed to her farm and intends to make her pay. The only problem - two kids weren't part of the plan.

Jenna and Jarrod may not see eye-to-eye but they are both determined to find happiness for their mom and keep their home safe. Can Lacey and Alex put their pasts behind them and embrace a future together?

My Comments:
I read (or at least start) a lot of Amazon freebies; most of them don't show up there.  That should tell you something.  This one grabbed me and held me.  Yes, it's self-published, and yes, there were a few editing errors.  No, the plot isn't the most original in the world but I liked Lacey and Alex, as well as Jarrod and Jenna.  Though there was some non-marital intimacy, it was not described in great detail.  Yes, it was happily ever after, probably too much so, but that's what I like.  Grade:  B-.

The first book in a contemporary romance series which takes place in Michigan's Copper Country.
Includes a sneak peek at Worth The Drive, The Worth Series Book 2: The Pretty One

My Comments:
As my regular readers know, I'm a fan of sophisticated, highly complicated, classic literature (ok maybe not).  However, my reading for the last few weeks has been even lighter that normal.  I've been reading a bunch of dreadful Kindle freebies which are absolutely not worth the trouble of reviewing.  Suffice to say, that they were worth what I paid for them, except that I kept reading them, probably because they were so predictable, so easy, and nothing I'd want to put here.  Yea, I'm a little burned out on reviewing.

Worth the Weight held my interest for more than a quick skim.  I found myself engrossed in this reunion of first loves.  She lives in the city now, and owns a successful business.  As noted above, she's just lost a lot of weight and now wants a "normal" romantic life. He lives in the small town in which they grew  up, is a farmer and single father to two kids.  Both had to learn to accept themselves and the  choices they had made in life. Both had close friends and families in their corner.  All in all, a really good story.  Like many Amazon cheapies  (still free as of this writing, $0.99 normal price) it has a few typos, but writing is better than I expected.  There are quite a few intimate scenes, they happen outside of marriage and they are on the explict side.  Grade:  B.

Kindle Freebie: Santa Wore Combat Boots

About the Book:

Emma Turner feels like her life ended with the death of her husband. Three years later she’s doing the best she can for her children and moving through life on autopilot. She doesn't believe true love can happen twice in a lifetime. As a matter of fact, she doesn't believe in much anymore. Bound by duty Jake Nicklaus never imagined he’d cross the line and fall in love with the woman he swore he’d watch over. If only he’d died on that chopper instead of her husband, she wouldn't be hurting. The only way to heal her heart is to show her how to live again. Finding the magic in Christmas is the perfect way to start.

Will one kiss under the mistletoe change their lives forever?

**This story was chosen as Best Holiday Short Story by the Syracuse Post Standard**

My Comments:
I grabbed this when it was an Amazon freebie and decided tonight that a short sweet read fit my mood completely.  Honestly, my expectations for Amazon freebies are pretty low, unless they are backlist books from authors about to publish new books.  In this case, those expectations were exceeded.  Not only did I not finish the book thinking "this could really use an editor", I really enjoyed this novella.  It was a clean read but there was plenty of attraction between Emma and Jake.  The only thing that might bother someone about this book is that Emma's late husband/Jake's friend appears in the story as a ghost, and Emma is seeking a medium to allow her more communication with her late husband.  Still, its a Christmas story, so in the end...  Grade:  B-.

Angela's Song: My Review

About the Book:
Widow and mother of three, Angela 'Jel' Cooke is full of regret about her marriage to her late husband. Her close friends can see that she is keeping busy to avoid her pain. But no amount of cooking, baking, volunteering or late-night games of Yahtzee with her BFF can bring her any peace. When Jack Bartolomucci walks into her life, he challenges Angela to face her demons head on. What follows is a poignant, sometimes hilarious tale of hope and healing.

My Comments:
I really enjoyed reading this very Catholic romance.  That being said, this romance was VERY Catholic.  When looking at faith-based fiction, I always consider how much is too much.  As Catholics, indeed as Christians of any ilk (or for that matter people of any faith tradition), our faith is supposed to be part of who we are and an integral part of our lives; not just something we do for an hour on Sunday morning (or whenever we worship).  However, I'll admit that the folks who talk about Jesus all the time, who have houses that look like they robbed a church, or who otherwise stand out from the crowd due to public displays of faith make me uncomfortable.  Perhaps that's why this book often rubbed me the wrong way.

Since her husband's death, Angela has come to realize that her marriage left a lot to be desired.  Because she has volunteered to work with youth ministry at church (along with a bunch of other ministries, which are described), the parish sends her to a series of classes on The Theology of the Body, which for those not familiar with it, is a work by Pope John Paul II that deals with sex and intimacy in marriage and how it images the love of Christ for the Church.  It presents what are often seen as oppressive rules against fornication, birth control or homosexual acts in a positive way--as in doing right will give you far more happiness than doing wrong, rather than "you'll go Hell if you do wrong".  Of course as readers, we get to listen to parts of the class.  She falls for the teacher, and eventually they begin a very chaste courtship.  During the course of the story we learn that both Jack and Angela attend daily mass and pray the rosary regularly.  Angela starts the day with the Morning Offering.  She gets spiritual direction from her pastor and we sit in on a couple of sessions.  At one point Angela gets very mad at Jack, kisses him passionately (without his permission) and then slaps him.  The next day she won't go to communion because she needs to confess.  Every time they have a meal together, the fact that they say grace is mentioned.  Angela's husband had been run over by a drugged out man.  There is a scene in which she makes a statement in the courtroom at his sentencing.  She forgave him--as opposed to the family of the other victim who spewed hatred.  When Angela and Jack are having a major disagreement not long before the wedding, they go and pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and of course afterwards are able to work it out.  Their wedding night includes prayer.  In short, Catholicism  penetrates every part of this book and Creedon is clearly trying to both educate her readers about Catholic sexual morality  and convince them that it will bring happiness in this life, not just save them from damnation.

Jack obviously cares a great deal for Angela, right from the beginning.  He is almost a God figure--he knows what's best, he insists they do things the right way.  He is there for Angela, but doesn't push himself on her.  He wants to take care of her.  As they grow closer, he insists on emotional intimacy and vulnerability.  He urges her to do things she needs to do to get her life in proper balance.  I read somewhere that it is our vocation as spouses to lead each other to heaven.  Jack is  clearly trying to do that to Angela.

So, the final verdict?  Good story, lots of romantic tension since they did not kiss on the lips until after they were engaged, and then quickly decided to wait until they got married because it flared so much passion.  Characters were very religious people who sometimes didn't seem quite real--well, Angela seemed to struggle a little with Jack's limits on physical intimacy, but she wanted to do it right this time.  It is a very religious story that is clearly trying to teach about Catholic sexual morality and push Catholic spiritual practices.  In short, if you don't like religious fiction, this is far too religious to recommend to you.  If you are a firm believer in the sexual moral teachings of the Catholic Church and want to read a romance novel that comports with them, this will be right up your alley.  If you want to learn about the moral teachings of the Catholic Church, this is a pleasant wrapper, though I think you'd learn more reading some of the books listed  at the end of this book than from reading this story.  If you want to know how the average person in the pew lives Catholicism, well, maybe I'm not average, but I think these two are too good to be true.

I got this book when it was an Amazon Kindle freebie though I'd like to thank Ellen Gable Hrkach for calling to to my attention.  Grade:  B--.

Quick Review of Amazon Freebie: Once Was Lost

About the Book:
Holly Dunn is starting life anew after her divorce is finally final. Life is tough, but thankfully, her ex father-in-law (formerly the town sheriff) remains her staunchest supporter, always lending a hand to assure Holly and her children have what they need.

When handsome new undersheriff, Matt Sanders, moves to town, she is embarrassed that their initial meeting happens on the roadway, when he pulls her over for speeding. He’s stern-faced and all-business, but Holly discovers there’s a heart of gold behind the badge.

Thanks to her former father-in-law, who has known Matt’s family for years, the undersheriff becomes a fixture in the family’s lives. Holly finds herself relying on him more and more, but soon decides it’s unfair to cast him in the role of “knight in shining armor.” She is determined to stand on her own two feet and ultimately pushes him away.

Matt wants a future with Holly, but wonders, can he convince her he’s ready to commit? And if he does, will she ever be able to fully trust again?

My Comments:
This was an Amazon freebie, though right now it is back at $2.99.  It was a good story with likable characters, though the writing was a bit overdone.  Grade:  B-

Short Review:

About the Book:
Lieutenant Magdalena Cruz had come home…And though all she wanted was to be alone, infuriatingly handsome Dr. Jake Dalton—of the enemy Daltons—wouldn't cooperate. And she needed him to, because the walls around her heart were dangerously close to crumbling every time he came near.…

Jake had spent most of his life trying to get closer to Maggie, with little to show for it. But she was the woman he'd always wanted, and no injury in the world could change that. Now if only he could convince her that the woman who stood before him was beautiful, desirable, whole…and meant to be his.…

My Comments:
I got this as an Amazon Freebie, and as of this writing , it is still free.  You can click the link under the book cover to get it (and I appreciate those who do).  It one of those stories of the boy who has secretly loved her since they were kids, and she has had a grudge against him just as long.  A fun mindless read, some adult activity, but not too explicit.  Grade:  B-

Amazon Freebie Review: The Millionaire's Nanny

About the Book:
Maggie Chisholm was determined to be the perfect nanny, and she gave her all to her six-year-old charge. But nothing in her training at Nanny School prepared her for the boy’s sexy father. Garrett Townsend was her employer for heaven’s sake and off-limits according to the Nanny Book of Unbreakable Rules. She could deal with any childhood crisis, but how could she maintain her professional distance when passion flared between them every time Garrett got too close?

Garrett was furious at the nanny agency for sending Maggie. The last thing he needed was a beautiful woman in his house. He’d mistakenly given his heart to one before, and he wasn’t going to let that happen again. But Christmas is coming and Maggie had already brought her warm, feminine touch into his home and Garrett found his willpower weakening…

My Comments:
He was expecting an older woman as a nanny; she was expecting a family with a baby.  Neither wanted to get involved.  Of course, she wasn't an older woman, and they did have feelings for each other.  It's a corny story with a predictable end but it was an Amazon freebie and I was in the mood for mind candy.  The writing isn't what you'd expect in a professionally published book but for a self-published freebie on Amazon it wasn't bad.  There are no intimate scenes.  Grade:  B-

Amazon Freebie: A Vision of Sugarplums

About the Book:
Meghan Castle is a real Scrooge about the holidays ... until she finds an abandoned baby in her store on Christmas Eve. Change is certainly in the air – especially when late shopper Rick Wallman walks in with yet another delightful holiday surprise.

Meghan has to take the baby home — that or call Social Services on Christmas Eve. Rick goes with her to help shop for baby supplies and winds up spending the night.

Meghan and Rick, though, each have secrets — one of which could destroy the fragile future they begin to build together.

A VISION OF SUGARPLUMS was the Midwest Fiction Writers’ choice for Best Contemporary Novella of 1996.

My Comments:
This was a cute story even if totally unrealistic and a little heavy on the adjectives/flowery language.  I figured out the "secret" before it was revealed, but you don't read romance novellas for their unexpected plot twists. As of this moment, it's a free read so if you have a Kindle or are willing to read on your computer, it's a risk free read.  Grade:  B-
