This looked like fun so I thought I'd play. Go to Coffee Addicted Writer's site to link-up or find other folks who are playing. Each week a question is asked. This week's question is: How do you turn down a review request? My answer is: It depends. If I have a relationship of some sort with the author, then I politely say that I'm too busy or not in the mood for that type of book or something that doesn't directly disparage the writer or book. If I get an unsolicited request in my email or an unsolicited book in my snail mail box, I respond if I am interested; ignore it if I'm not.
I need to learn how to say NO to authors. You seem to have an idea how to do it.

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop. I hope you can participate each week. It is fun.
ReplyDeleteI do basically the same as you, but I answer every request either negative or positive with respect to reviewing the book.
Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier for my full answer. Declining is tricky, but it can be done graciously as I have seen from many answers today including mine. :)
Happy Hopping!!

There was a time when I was getting flooded with review requests, coming directly from authors. It was very difficult for me to turn some of them down, so I used to just ignore them. But I did feel bad about this. Having a relationship with the author makes it even MORE difficult to say "no". Of course, being polite about it does help, but I think it's still an uncomfortable situation.
ReplyDeleteEver since I started participating in blog tours, I haven't had any more individual review requests. Problem solved!
Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting on my BBH post!! : )
As an author, I appreciate the closure of a reply, but bear in mind we're pretty used to no responses = not interested. :) Although I haven't asked for reviews very often, yet, anyway!
DeleteI respond to every request I get, whether it's a negative or positive response. But I also don't get that many requests to begin with, so I haven't gotten overwhelmed by them yet. And I'd have a hard time telling an author "no" if I had some sort of relationship with them, depending on the relationship.
