Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival

Hello, and welcome to Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival. We are a group of Catholic bloggers who gather weekly to share our best posts with each other. I'd like to ask for prayers for Kathy and her family.  I "met" Kathy over ten years ago on an AOL message board for Catholic moms.  At the time those of us who were regulars on that board were pretty much thirty-something moms of young kids.  Quite of few of us have stuck together through the years and now are part of a facebook group.  I've met a few "in real life" but most are "just" cyber friends.  Kathy and I used to IM late at night about our special needs kids, among other things.  She was on of the most compassionate yet sensible people I knew.  Unfortunately this week she lost her battle with lung cancer.  She leaves behind a married daughter who is expecting her first baby in a couple of months, a special needs high school junior and a disabled husband.

Oh, and let me add a proud mama brag:  My older daughter just received a scholarship offer from her college of choice, Northwestern State University of Louisiana.  It will cost us less than $4,000 next year for tuition, room, board, and books!

I'd like to thank all of you who kept my family in your prayers last week.  My dad is home from the hospital, and my sister, who took leave to look after him has headed home, figuring she isn't needed there.  My cousin had her surgery, and the biopsy came back negative.  While she doesn't see the cancer specialist until after the  first of the year, she has been told there is a possibility she won't even need chemo.

This week I participated in First Wildcard Tours for two books:  the first is an oldie but goodie--Scott Hahn's Lamb's Supper; the second is a new study guide that can be used by discussion groups or individuals.  I recommend them both.

Last week I said we were going to try something new.  Sunday Snippets has never had a theme--unlike the old Catholic Carnival where some talented bloggers would take a bunch of unrelated posts and somehow tie them all together.  I asked all participants to write one post about the Rosary this week, and to include that post as one of your "snippets".  You are welcome to participate in Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival, even if you didn't write about the rosary this week, but I though it would be fun to periodically try to post on the same subjects.  So, tell us what you wrote about the rosary, but we want to hear about other Catholic posts as well.

My Rosary post was about the Rosary Patch program in which my Girl Scouts participated.  I recommend it.

Today is Mother's Day, and I hope all moms have a great one.  Something that makes being a good mom easier is having a good dad in the family.  I read a children's book this week that honors the role of Daddy.

Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival

DAT!!!!!!!!

The most popular Saints in town now are Drew, Reggie, Sean and company.  Hopefully everyone will be happier tomorrow than they are today.  My college roomate is stopping in tomorrow on her way from Mississippi to Houston; since she was in Mississippi she said she wanted to watch the game in NO, and since I live here... This place is Saints crazy right now, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if our closing hymn tomorrow was When The Saints Go Marching In, and I'll bet Father will set a speed record at 6 pm mass,which I'm betting will be most empty.  When I was at the grocery store today, they were trying to convince everyone that they needed to stock up on stuff to watch the game, and they were selling the latest craze--black and gold king cakes, which come with footballs in them rather than babies. It's been a fun run, hopefully it will continue.

So what did I blog about this week?  If you are thinking about a Bible study for Lent, here is one I recommend.  If you are a blogger, and a reader, I'd suggest you sign up for The Catholic Company's blogger program.  They have a list of books from which you can choose.  You request one, you read it, you post a review on your blog and report it to them.  Chris sends a nice thank you and then  you can request another book.  Sometimes Chris' thank-yous are the nicest part of the process!

I passed out a little Link Love to a couple of Sunday Snippets participants, and if you are looking for something about which to write, join that feature too!  I'm not going to send out weekly emails, but I am thinking of making Link Love a regular Friday feature.

Happy Advent to all my readers. This year I'm participating in an Advent Calendar put together by Catholic Roundup. My post about it is here. My contribution is a post of Advent links for families with children. Advent is a time to get ready for Christmas, and part of that is cooking. I reviewed two Christian-themed Christmas cookbooks, Christmas Kitchen and Visions of Sugarplums. I also posted an article by Mary Ann Espisito about Holiday Cooking. Finally, like many bloggers, my Google Reader is overflowing with interesting posts. I have a semi-regular feature, "From My Reader" where I share some of my finds. This week has one about a contest for a children's book about John Paul II.

No real "Catholic" posts from me this week, but I invite you to poke around a little while you are here, I did review a few books. I didn't blog about any specifically Catholic topics this week. However, I read You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, which has a strong pro-life subplot. I also read Daisy Chain, which had a positive portrayal of Catholicism.

Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival

Jay at Living Catholicism ran the Catholic Carnival for years, but recently had to stop. While I read posts on several blogs lamenting the loss of the Carnival, I didn't see anyone volunteering to take it over. I decided to try--but realized that a carnival is a lot of work. Jay sent out weekly messages asking for contributions, got people to host and sent out message indicating when the carnival was posted. Hosts had to gather and compile the postings for the week.

Book Bloggers are fond of memes. Check my blog or the book blogs on my sidebar and you'll see Mailbox Mondays, Teaser Tuesdays and Thinger Tuesdays, Wordless Wednesdays, and more. These memes encourage us to visit each others blogs and give us handy links to do so. I decided that I'd try reviving the Catholic Carnival as a meme, so please, join in.

Who can play? Anyone posting about things Catholic. Some blogs are focused on Catholicism; others, like mine, mention it periodically. Both are welcome here. While I am not going to stay on the computer all day to monitor posts, nor am I going to moderate them, I will remove links to blatant spam or obvious anti-Catholic posts.

How do you participate? Go to your blog. Write a post titled Sunday Snippets--A Catholic Carnival. In it summarize and link to any posts you want to bring to our attention. You can highlight one post or a dozen. You can pontificate on the subject of your choice, share links or ask for prayers. In your post, link to this master Sunday Snippets post.
